Round 1 Rogue Combo

Game 1
I lose the die roll and my opponent begins with a land drop. He smiles and tells me that I most likely have a bye because his deck is not strong enough and he built it for fun. I am unsure whether to believe him or not but he seemed like a nice enough guy. I went for the early Ancestral Recall and countered his Ancestral Recall on his turn. I then let a threat resolve (a damage dealing artifact that deals 1 damage for every counter on it and each player exchanges control of it at the end of turn) and then resolve an Oath of Druids with a Forbidden Orchard active. The artifact deals me around 4 damage and I Oath up Iona naming Blue. The artifact deals me 5 damage and I Oath up Sphinx of the Steel Wind. I then attack him with Iona, Merchant Scroll for Force of Will and he dies to his own artifact at 6 damage. (He was already down because of previous damage taken from his fetches and artifact)

Sideboard: -1 Island, -1 Terastodan +2 Thoughtseize

Game 2
He plays land, Mox, Mox, and Fecundity. I have no Force of Will and so say okay. I Duress him and take his winning combo piece. The situation then became funny because now I understood the jokes that him and his friends were making the whole time. The combo was fun and interesting too. We both kind of laughed and proceeded. And I played Time Vault and topdecked Voltaic Key the next turn.

Round 2 Trygon Jace

Game 1
I lose the die roll and he plays Island, Mox, Go. I play Forbidden Orchard, Mox and Oath. He cracks his Island and Spell Pierces it. I Force, he Forces back. He draws, plays a land, and says go. I play Demonic Tutor and go for Ancestral Recall. It resolves and I outcounter him due to the fact that I have more resources in hand. I eventually win through KeyVault I think although he did resolve a Dark Confidant and drew around 2 cards with it. I’m sorry that I do not remember much more after resolving my Ancestral Recall. But I do know that it was the spell that put me ahead of him the whole game and won me the attrition war that is so important in the Mana Drain mirror.

Sideboard: -1 Island, -1 Terastodan +2 Thoughtseize

Game 2
This game was very close and too many things happened for me to remember all of it. But I do remember that I started with a slow hand full of protection. We traded cards one for one while he eventually resolved a Trygon Predator. I topdecked Gifts Ungiven that got me Show and Tell, Ancestral Recall, Time Walk, and Mana Drain. He gave me Show and Tell and Time Walk. And played my Terastodan and destroyed 3 of my tapped lands I think. He played nothing and I won through sheer brute force after Time Walking.

Round 3 Trygon Jace

Game 1
I win the die roll and start off with land drops. I play early Oath without an Orchard. He resolves an Ancestral Recall and but cannot do anything about my Forbidden Orchard that I topdeck. I had a second Oath that I did not play because I wanted to “bluff” but that was just greedy of me and was my first huge misplay of the day. (I don’t really remember this turn) He plays Jace and Dark Confidant?, Brainstorms, and says go. I Oath into Terastodan and destroy his Jace and 2 colored mana and topdeck Iona (I would have double Oathed had I played my 2nd Oath). He topdecks Demonic Tutor for Black Lotus and plays Yawgmoth’s Will into Ancestral Recall, Demonic Tutor, and KeyVault.

Sideboard: -1 Island, -1 Terastodan +2 Thoughtseize

Game 2
We both mulligan to and I go first and play Mox Sapphire, Underground Sea, and Thoughtseize him. I saw Pyroblast, Thoughtseize, Underground Sea, Force of Will, Brainstorm, and Spell Pierce. I take Thoughtseize and pass. He plays Underground Sea and passes. I play a land and Voltaic Key. He lets it resolve. He plays Brainstorm end of my turn and I Spell Pierce it. He topdecks into no land and says go. I play Oath of Druids and he Spell Pierces it. I Force of Will. He Force of Will back. He topdecks into land and plays it. And I think I topdeck into another Oath. This one resolves but I already have drawn 2 of my creatures by the time I play my Forbidden Orchard on the next turn. He plays another land. I Oath up Terastodan and blow up my Oath and 2 other lands. (I had drawn 2 creatures at this point). He topdecks into Yawgmoth’s Will but had no black mana.

Game 3
As always, Game 3 is the most intense. He goes first and we both develop our mana while trading cards one for one. I lead with an Oath and win the counter war. But I do not have an Orchard. He draws and sighs and passes. We continue to play draw go but I eventually topdeck a Forbidden Orchard. He also topdecks in to a Jace and plays it after winning the counter war because of Pyroblast. Terastodan comes in and destroys Jace, my Oath, and 1 of my own land(I had drawn the other 2 creatures). I then topdeck Mana Drain. He attempts to play another Jace on his turn but I Mana Drain it and he cannot find a blue card to pitch for his Force of Will. My Terastodan swings and he concedes.

3-0-0 (6-1-0)

Round 4 0 土地 Belcher

Game 1
I win the die roll and begin with land go. He plays 2 Spirit Guides and Manamorphisis which I Spell Pierce. I play another land and say go. He plays Mox Ruby I think and then Right of Flame which I Spell Pierce. He says go. I play land and Time Vault. He plays a Grim Monolith after using another Spirit Guide and I let it resolve. I play land and I think cast a Ponder and say go. He plays a Goblin Charbelcher and I Force of Will it and he plays Guttural Response off of yet another Spirit Guide I think. The Goblin Charbelcher resolves but he cannot activate it because Grim Monolith is tapped. We topdeck for 2 turns before I topdeck into Voltaic Key and win.

Sideboard: -1 Island, -1 Terastodan, -1 Mana Drain +3 Thoughtseize

Game 2
He starts off with enough mana sources in his hand to cast Empty the Warrens after I counter a Right of Flame with my Force of Will. Empty the Warrens at 6 storm and I concede. I could have topdecked into KeyVault or something that led to KeyVault but this was a practice game and I wanted to simply just go to game 3 and did not want to bother. Judgeing from my hand though, it was very unlikely and I had to draw both Key and then Vault. He asks what I sideboard and I tell him. I laugh to myself when he says that he sideboarded in “1 or 2 Nature’s Claims” (It was either 1 or 2 and I guess it was a habit for him not to give away too many information)

Game 3
I start off with first turn Thoughtseize and take the Goblin Charbelcher. He had Tinker but no artifacts. He does not get another artifact for a while and draws and says go. I play Oath of Druids and he draws and says go. I play Gifts Ungiven. I get Terastodon, Ancestral Recall, Time Walk, and Forbidden Orchard. He gives me Ancestral Recall and Time Walk. I Ancestral Recall into cards that got me KeyVault.

Round 5 John Rowe with Dredge

ID

Round 6 Trygon Jace

Game 1
I win the die roll and we both mulligan to 6. My hand is Terastodan, Terastodan, Show and Tell, Tinker, Forbidden Ochard, Mox. I open with Land + Mox and go. He plays land, mox, moxàTrygon Predator. I topdeck into Land and tell myself I want to bait with the Tinker and then play Show and Tell. But I play Show and Tell after my mind just slipped and he counters it. His Trygon Predator destroys my Mox and I cannot Tinker the whole game. He resolves Jace and just simply fateseals me but never puts anything to the bottom of the library. I lose to Trygon Predator and Spirit Token beats. My second huge misplay of the day. Learn from me people and discipline your minds ><

Sideboard: -1 Island, -1 Terastodan +2 Thoughtseize

Game 2

I go first and Thoughtseize him. I take his counter and he plays lands and passes. I play my tutor into Ancestral Recall and shoot it at myself. He lets it resolve. He plays more land and says go while I play Time Vault (Ancestral had drawn me Tinker but I was going to play Time Vault first. If he destroyed it or countered it then Tinker would get me Sphinx of the Steel Wind). He plays Trygon Predator or Dark Confidant I think and I Tinker for Voltaic Key. He Spell Pierces while I Force of Will. He lets it resolve and I take infinite turns. I know he is not conceding because he wants to see my Oath targets. So I take infinite turns and play Sphinx of the Steel Wind to win.

Game 3

Very close game again. He plays land and go. I Thoughseize him and take a counterspell. We both develop our mana and just keep on laying down land and passing. The key turn comes when I play an Ancestral Recall and win the counter war and draw into Tinker and Time Vault. He plays Jace on his turn and I let it resolve because I did not want to pitch Force of Will and Tinker. Also, I did know that I was ahead on cards and that Jace would just give him +1 card at the max before I can assemble KeyVault. I play Time Vault and he lets it resolve and then I Thoughtseize him and see this: Dark Confidant, Time Walk, Force of Will, Spell Pierce. I take his Time Walk. He then brainstorms a second time with Jace and taps his Mox Emerald and land for a Dark Confidant. I topdeck into Duress and Duress him. He has Nature’s Claim, Force of Will, and some other card. He is disappointed at himself visibly and remarks that he punted by tapping his green source. Unfortunately that was true and apparently we both made huge mistakes this round.

Round 7 Matteo Tarbet with Expresso Stax (Null Rod Version)

Game 1
We both mulligan to 6 but I do not have many threats. We both just lay down land and he lays down 1 Sphere of Resistance and 2 Tangle Wires. It matters little because I do not have any threats and neither does he. We both actually just topdeck mana. I finally topdeck enough mana to Show and Tell my Terastodan. He has no cards in hand. I destroy his Smokestack and 2 of my permenants. I thought I had the game but he topdecks Duplicant! Such is Magic.

Sideboard: -1 Gifts Ungiven, -1 Merchant’s Scroll, -2 Spell Pierce +3 Nature’s Claim, +1 Hurkyl’s Recall

Game 2
I keep a hand full of counters but no threats again. He has turn 0 Leyline of Sanctity and I cannot Thoughtseize his last Karn away (I countered his 2 Lodestone Golems). His Karn makes a lot of artifacts creatures and I literally just topdeck land. Argh. Disgusting. I must have not shuffled well enough. But the main point was that Leyline of Sanctity made my Thoughtseize useless. And if Thoughtseize was a Mana Drain, the game would have proceded and I would have eventually found my threats. Whether I would have won or not is another question.

But I now think that Mana Drain should be a 4 of rather than a 3 of. In the MUD matchup it makes a big difference because Thoughtseize also makes you search for a Underground Sea too. I also do not think Mana Drain would hold me back in the Control Mirror because today I generally had enough mana anyway…but we will see.
